Chicago Supermarket

Chicago Supermarket is a normal Mexican grocery store, but at the back of the store is a small counter serving fantastic tacos. You can get chicken, beef, and some other mystery meat. (We tried to ask what that meat was, but the people working there spoke no English. I mean, NO English at all. This is the sign of a good ethnic restaurant!)

We ordered a couple chicken tacos, a couple beef tacos, and a cheese gordita. We could have done without the gordita, but the tacos were AWESOME. Each one comes on a freshly made tortilla shell, and then you can garnish the tacos however you choose at the little salsa bar. We like to load them up with fresh cilantro, chopped onions, and some of the green salsa. There are several kinds of salsa and some guacamole - all yummy.

Each taco was inexpensive - like less than $2. They are known as Weekend Tacos, so I assume they are only available on the weekends.

After having tacos, be sure to pick up a bag or three of Taki's (little rolled tortilla chips) from the grocery store - we like the firey Fuego flavor!

Overall rating: Freakin' great tacos. Cheap, delicious, awesome.

La Churreria

AWESOME churros!! This bakery also has other yummy sweets, of which we tried a variety. But the standout was definitely the hot, fresh, delicious churros. We've also had churros from the Buford Highway Farmers Market, but they don't compare to the yummy goodness at La Churreria.

Overall rating: Holy cow, good churros!!

Quoc Huong Banh Mi Fast Food

Here we had our first taste of bahn mi, or traditional Vietnamese sandwiches. WOW. So good. We ordered one with chicken and one with barbecue pork. We both agreed that the chicken was slightly better. The sandwiches come on wonderful French bread, with fresh herbs, carrots, and some sort of sweet homemade mayonnaise on them. The prices were between $2 and $2.50 - a total steal.

We also split an order of pho with well-done flank. I've never met a pho I didn't like, and this one did not disappoint. I also had a drink of lemonade mixed with soda.

When we go back for lunch, splitting one sandwich and one pho would probably be more than enough. Our total bill was around $12.

Overall rating: A-MA-ZING! Everything was delicious and inexpensive. A week later, we are still talking about this restaurant.

Ming's

At Ming's, we really enjoyed the stir-fried noodles with honey pork and the spare ribs with rice and green vegetables. We also had the roasted duck with wonton noodle soup - this was OK, but not our favorite. The wontons and broth were good, but the duck was just eh. We decided that maybe we just don't like duck that much. Our total bill for three entrees was around $20. (Three entrees for two people? Yes, we brought home leftovers!)

UPDATE: On a second visit, we ordered a dish called fresh greens with seafood (shrimp, scallops, and squid) and really loved it. We also got a pound of honey BBQ pork to go and ate it over the next few days. Yummy!

ANOTHER UPDATE: On a third visit, we had the fresh greens with seafood and the spare ribs with rice and green veggies again (both still awesome), as well as shredded pork and braised cabbage stir fried rice noodles (also awesome).

Overall rating: Very good, when we're in the mood for Chinese. This place was a thousand times better and more authentic than any Chinese take-out type place. We weren't completely bowled over by Ming's, but we enjoyed it very much. We agree that Chinese isn't our favorite ethnic food, but this is probably the best Chinese food we've had. (Update: Actually, after eating at Ming's three times now, I take back the "not completely bowled over" comment. I'm more and more impressed with Ming's each time we go.)

Located on Buford Highway in the Asian Square shopping center. A second location is located in Duluth.
